Pink SF is racist

For all that the SF-SJWs posture and pose about their anti-racism, mainstream SF/F, and in particular, SF/F editors, have proven to be some of the worst racists to be found outside the Ku Klux Klan. You know it's true, as not only has Tor's Patrick Nielsen Hayden publicly confessed to being a racist, but a statistician has conclusively proved how virulently and structurally racist the mainstream science fiction publications are.
For many science fiction and fantasy writers, the value of a solid bibliography of short fiction cannot be understated. While sales often aren’t lucrative enough to be an independent income stream, it can lead to novel solicitations, columns, editorial positions, and other work that can lead to a higher profile and more opportunities. Having published short fiction helps a writer expose their ideas to the wider community and build an audience, a brand, and a foundation from which to grow their careers.

The field of short science fiction and fantasy — at least U.S. publications, which make up the bulk of the field — is essentially not publishing black writers. This locks them out of this valuable process.

I first noticed this in the anthology market. Several anthologies that I looked at, that I read, and even that I initially reviewed positively looked pretty diverse until I took a closer look at their table of contents, which appeared to have zero stories written by black people. I knew of several other anthologies with missions of publishing black authors specifically or people of color generally, so I was pretty sure that this pattern wasn’t in alignment with the actual demographics of the field. At the same time, someone I know, Ethan Robinson, was noticing the same thing about the magazine markets.

And he began to count.

The methodology is flawed, as it’s based in self-reported data whenever possible, but such data was not always findable or clear. I consulted an actuary, Weston Allen. He and I assumed that there may have been a few false positives and false negatives, but not in such numbers as to unduly dilute the study. And the numbers are very damning. Out of 2,039 original stories published in 63 magazines in 2015, only 38 stories could be found that were written by black authors.

That’s just under 2%. The median number of stories by black authors in these magazines is zero, which means that more than half of all speculative fiction publications measured did not publish a single original story by a black author in the year of 2015.
Very damning indeed. I don't know about you, but obviously, the only solution is for Tor Books, Orbit, DAW, and all the various science fiction magazines to publicly commit to devote at least 14 percent of their total published word count and book advance money to African-American authors, and another 2 percent to Native American authors. Also, all future science fiction awards should go to African-American and Native American authors until the historical percentages are in line with current demographics.

Anything less would only prove that they are horrible racists who want to murder blacks and Indians.

38 stories? Maybe it's even worse, and all 38 were written by a single author? Is the half-savage herself perhaps The One?

How many black SFF authors can there possibly be?

I don't suppose these racial identification experts would actually tell us how they make racial identification.

How can anyone take them seriously?

So much of these writers' posturing is nothing more than what they feel is an appropriate penance of virtue signaling neccassary to stay relevant. If you look at some of their twitter accounts you see they are merely parroting talking points of the left (as if there is some secret email list that gives them tweet suggestions) on the issues of the day.

It makes you wonder, especially when money and fame is at stake, just how far someone will go to "sell out" for lack of better words. It also makes you question the genuiness of many writers and personalities on both sides of the fence; are they sincere, or are they just striking while the irons got? I for one hate being swindled.

For example I recently saw an up and coming "conservative" sensation appear on a morning talk show. Her swollen face (from recent Botox injections dispite being decades away from even having to consider such a procedure) revealed a level of vanity that sent up red flags in my mind that this woman was not what she wanted people to believe she was, and though she claimed to be a conservative and to be fiercely pro-Trump, she shocked the audience when she revealed her pro-abortion position. Can any one say Hegelian dialectic?

Oh, but I digress, but why should we be surprised at this recent revelation of racist writers when many writers are little more than bullshit artists these days anyway.

Talking about fiction being racist... I was thinking about doing some research in imdb and making some statistics about last years blockbusters, getting the percentage of each race/gender in the traditional story archetypes: villains, main character, clown, and so.

I have the feeling that lately white males only play villains, psychopaths and nerds in most movies.

I have no blog. Vox, if I make some infographic, would you publish it in the blog?

I am sure this has nothing to do with the fact that sci-fi is not the most beloved form of entertainment by the african american demographic. I do in fact think they prefer action movies. Perhaps someone should check if they have a bigger part in publishing action stories instead. Lucas got Samuel Jackson in order to get them to the Star wars prequels. If few are interested in something, few will write about it.

"Several anthologies that I looked at, that I read, and even that I initially reviewed positively looked pretty diverse until I took a closer look at their table of contents, which appeared to have zero stories written by black people."

This sentence puzzles me. If there were zero black authors, why did they look diverse at first, even after reading them? Did they have lots of black characters, written by non-blacks engaging in cultural appropriation? Were there just pictures of blacks on the cover? Were they loaded with female, homosexual, transvestite, and non-white (but not black) authors, and she forgot that "diversity" in America today means "a disproportionately high ratio of blacks," not just "no straight white males"?

Also, all future science fiction awards should go to African-American and Native American authors until the historical percentages are in line with current demographics.

All publishers, in addition, should spend the rest of their lives in repentance and pleading for mercy from the pink SF/F gods for their racist behaviors. The promise is that no mercy will be forthcoming, and your penitent prayers will be used against you.

How do you suppose he was identifying black people in the table of contents? Maybe the anthology was really helpful and there was a "POC" after the author's name? Perhaps he was looking for the most ghetto names he could find; LaShonda, Jamelle, Trayvon, LaShaniqua, Reince Priebus? That wouldn't be raciss, no sir!

Blogger Lovekraft March 19, 2017 10:39 AM

From Takimag's "This Week in Stupid":

"Rich white students tend to suffer from “trauma envy” and thus have an insatiable need to identify with the “oppressed,” so long as such identification is done from a “safe space” where they don’t have to get unnecessarily dirty or suffer any oppression themselves. Poorer students tend to get distracted by trivialities such as wondering how they’ll feed themselves for the rest of their lives."

This would lend weight to the claim that diversity is pushed mainly by the fake, promoting the underserving and grudgingly accepted by the shackled masses.

Blogger Yarnwinder March 19, 2017 10:46 AM

Affirmative Action for the literary set? I think Vox is having some fun here.

I am willing to bet that the average reader doesn't give a damn about the ethnic background of the writer as long as the story is good. And who sees a writer's face until after he is famous? It is a moot point after that.

And if your name is something like Donte' Jamil, then use a pen name. It has been done before.

Blogger Thucydides March 19, 2017 10:49 AM

Sigh.

I look for good stories when I read a book or magazine, not what shape, size, colour, sex, ethnicity or pathological deviation the author has....

Maybe someone should study magazines for the character of their content, not the colour of their authors......

Wow. Wow. Only 14 percent? I watch TV all the time so I know that Our Sainted African-Americans make up at least half of the US population.

Those companies need to devote at least 50% of their money to be fair!

I'm so offended. They do a study of black authors but don't even MENTION hispanic authors in that. Are we supposed to be invisible to them? That's what I'm being told by their study and analysis. Troubling that big publishing should be so exclusive.

Anime takes the features that are different from Asians- whites and exaggerates them. Unlike the big lipped watermelon eating blacks seen on old cartoons that bothered blacks, anime whites are the only new cartoons where whites act white so many white kids prefer it. Perhaps even blacks prefer white women to act like white women?

Good luck with that. I don't think there is much market in SF for, what John Derbyshire terms, “Blackity, black, black, bla, bla, blackity, blackity, black, black”.

Anonymous SciVo de Plorable March 19, 2017 5:48 PM

Call me crazy, but I think 1. maybe black people are racist and prejudicially assume that white people are racist and wouldn't read them so hide their identities, and regardless 2. it makes more sense to compare acceptance rates anyway because 3. maybe black people are anti-deaf bigots and don't like to fix their thoughts into written words as much, due to a prejudicial preference for verbalization. And anyway it's kind of 4. a prejudicial bigotry against a preference for the immediate and concrete to assume that all races must have as much interest in spec-fic in the first place, or else they aren't worth as much.

Anonymous Mr. Rational March 19, 2017 6:24 PM

TBH, even fractionally-Black people like Delaney don't write SF very well.  I read "Babel-17" and was not thrilled.  A friend of mine read Dhalgren cover to cover and said it was the worst thing he'd ever read.

I'm so red-pilled about Social Justice messaging and Affirmative Action reviewing, you'd have to pay me consulting rates to even pick up an Octavia Butler book.

Blogger Lance E March 19, 2017 8:28 PM

According to what the SJWs at work keep telling me, diversity is *proven* to improve organizational performance, so I'm sure they should have no problem imposing some quotas from a profitability point of view, in addition to being less racist.

Also, feminist studies peer-reviewed by feminist professors prove conclusively that more women also lead to improved performance, and that this effect has no theoretical limit, so that 14% black authorship should ideally all be women.

Anonymous Avalanche March 19, 2017 10:06 PM

@37 "this effect has no theoretical limit, so that 14% black authorship should ideally all be women."

Oh no no no!! You typical patriarchal white male! (You're probably cisgendered too, aren't you?!) We know about you capitalist pigs using one person instead of the TWO you SHOULD have hired for ACTUAL diversity!! No claiming two "I ain't predjewdissed" chips in the body of one person!
